LBBG 3cy, March 15 2003, Boulogne-sur-Mer, France (50.42N,1.34E).
A 3cy Lesser Black-backed Gull, which is in active moult. Most of the scapulars are adult-like grey, contrasting with the barred lesser coverts. Several outer and inner median coverts have been replaced for grey feathers, almost creating a grey covert bar on the medians, as can be seen commonly in 3cy spring LBBG.
Interestingly, this individual is actively moulting the tail-feathers, probably as a last stage of the partial moult on the wintering grounds / stop-over sites.
