LBBG 3cy, July 07 2001, IJmuiden, the Netherlands. A 3cy LBBG showing arrested moult in the primaries (moulted to third generation up to P6). Grey tone of the upper-parts is in line with immature graellsii and Dutch intergrades and probably too pale for intermedius and fuscus. The tail has the central tail feathers replaced by fresh white feathers. Some fresh third generation tail-feathers still have black central markings. The dark iris and black ring on the bill are common features in 3cy LBBGs. Note the pale yellow legs. Last spring 2001, over 35 birds showing arrested moult have been encountered in the Netherlands. Intermedius/graellsii may show arrested moult in some 3-4% of immature individuals: in most cases (presumed) 3cy. For more images of LBBGs with arrested moult: - one seen at IJmuiden, - birds from the Maasvlakte (the Netherlands) in May 2001, - birds at Le Portel (France) on the beach in May, - possible fuscus at Dannes (France).
