Lesser Black-backed Gull (graellsii & intermedius)

LBBG 3cy, June 16 2001, Dintelhaven - Maasvlakte, the Netherlands. (App 3 weeks dead)

Second generation remiges and coverts. The ordinary pattern for a 3cy LBBG in spring: old worn feathers, the tips lacking the former white fringe. Note the dark outer-web on the secondaries and the variegated brown-black pattern at the top half of particularly the outer secondaries (S1-S5). The dark outer-webs of the remiges result in a dark inner-hand in flying birds, but note that in extreme stretched wings, the paler inner-webs are visible and make the overall impression much paler. 
Early June, P1 has been shed in both wings.
