Herring Gull 3cy 5.335.124 (argenteus), September 24 2002, Scheveningen, the Netherlands. A bird with a Dutch ring: Vogeltrekstation Arnhem Holland 5.335.124. It was ringed as pullus on June 26 2000 at IJmuiden, the Netherlands. Note the advanced moult score with all second generation primaries shed and P8 fully grown, P9 at the length of P6. The inner greater and median coverts, which were moulted first last summer show an obvious barred pattern, while later moulted feathers appear more uniform grey (although some show a brown hue). The head feathers have been replaced by extensively brown mottled feathers, creating a hooded effect in autumn. Note the colour of iris and bill. From June to October, a complete moult
will bring 3cy argenteus in so-called "third winter" plumage.
By September, when the complete moult is (almost) finished,
the head will show extensive 'winter streaking', mottled brown contrasting
with the white breast as in an executioner's hood. The scapulars and
mantle are pale adult-like grey, although some individuals may show an
immature
pale brown hue on the lower scapulars.
