Photo 2: Yellow-legged Gull 1cy, August 25 2000, Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. This bird has already moulted many mantle feathers and scapulars, while in the median coverts moult started and new feathers are growing in. All outer median coverts have been shed. Note the pattern on greater coverts and the tertials, with only limited notching on the fringe. Typically, the head is pale with a dark smudge around the eye and the under-parts are paler than most Herring Gulls. The bill is heavy with an obvious angle (but note there is some mud at the bill in this individual). The overall colour of the new upper-part feathers is with a ginger tone. In the background an intermedius LBBG; in front is a graellsii LBBG.
