11: Yellow-legged
Gull 1cy August 24 2000, Etaples, France.
Two flying
first-winter YLG's michahellis which show the typical tail pattern: very white
basal half with a
small wedge-shaped, sharp-demarcated blackish tail-band. The inner primaries
show paler
inner webs, creating a 'window' and resulting in a much paler inner wing than
found in Lesser Black-backed Gulls (LBBG, graellsii), but still obvious
darker than in Herring Gull argentatus and Pontic Gull cachinnans. Many YLG show a pale collar between
darker crown and upper-mantle and have a darker upper breast-band. Note
the heavy appearance on broad and rounded
wings (in contrast to many LBBG).
