Photo 5707: michahellis juvenile, July 30 2001, Le Portel (France). The most advanced juvenile encountered by late July: almost all the small scapulars moulted, many greater scapulars new, upper 3 tertials replaced and #4 growing, 4 greater coverts new and 1 missing, 3 median coverts new and 3 medians missing and probably 1 new covert already showing wear. Such very advanced moult in a juvenile large white-headed gull strongly advocates michahellis. Scapulars are replaced, although the 'old' juvenile scapulars show hardly any wear. Nevertheless, already by July, many juvenile michahellis show wear in the scapulars, inner greater and median coverts and in the tertial fringes.
