photo 13: Yellow-legged Gull michahellis 2cy,
August 25 2000, Le Portel / Boulogne-sur-Mer, NW France.
Primary
moult score: P8 is fully grown and P9 has to grow just a few inches. The
upper two tertials are missing as can be seen in quite some 2cy michahellis
by the end of August. In the greater coverts the innermost feather is
still missing and #3-4 have been renewed very recently and can be
recognized by the grey-buffish centre and neat white fringe. In the median
coverts, #3 has been replaced recently as well and the white tips on the
outer median coverts are well-defined. Moult is in progress in the central
lower lesser coverts where new feathers appear greyish with an ill-defined
brownish shaft streak. Note the dark centred lesser coverts in the carpal
edge (the outer lesser coverts). A few scapulars have a bold pattern, but
most are grey adult-like.
