photo 1339: Yellow-legged Gull michahellis 2cy, June 14 2002, Etaples, NW France. The individual below is very reminiscent of the bird depicted right. Primary moult stage: P5 is at the length of P4, P7 has been shed and P8-P10 are still juvenile. Most of the median and lower lesser coverts have been renewed, but the gap at the central median coverts still has to be closed. The inner greater coverts and upper tertials have been replaced as well. The central and outer greater coverts have been dropped recently, exposing the secondaries underneath. This is another individual that is illustrative for 2cy michahellis moulting to 'barred' birds by the end of June, early July. See e.g. this 2cy from the end of June. The scapulars in the lowest row and the rear lower upper scapulars are missing, with most lowest scapulars still old second generation. The soft parts still look immature; the iris and bill are black, the legs are pale flesh pink, as can be seen in most 2cy michahellis. |
