photo 1351: Yellow-legged Gull michahellis 2cy,
June 14 2002, Etaples, NW France.
This
individual's primary moult stage: P5 has been shed and P6-P10 are still juvenile.
This individual shows three types of wing-coverts: the outer and central
greater coverts are very abraded with most of the feathers completely
gone, leaving only the shaft streak. The inner and central median coverts
are examples of second generation feathers which were moulted in the
post-juvenile (first pre-basic) moult last autumn. Those central medians
are in slightly better condition than the adjacent juvenile greater
coverts. The outer median and lower lesser coverts have been shed and new
feathers are growing in, with greyish-brown bases and blackish barred
patterns.
The upper tertials
have been replaced recently. Most of
the upper
scapulars and upper lower scapulars have been moulted, with the last
moulted feathers more adult-like grey,
some with
a pronounced black shaft streak. The visible tail-feathers are still juvenile,
but it seems not all rectrices are still present. The bare parts look immature; the iris is dark, the
bill is pale based with a dark tip and the legs are pale flesh pink, as can be seen in most 2cy michahellis.
