Yellow-legged Gull michahellis 2cy,
October
14 2001,
Westkapelle, the Netherlands.
A typical 2cy michahellis for
October. Some lower lesser coverts have been shed and new grey feathers
are growing. Note the fresh upper tertials, which have a different
pattern: they appear plain grey. All the visible median and the inner
greater coverts have been replaced by plain grey (probably fourth
generation) feathers. The lesser coverts which were moulted last in row in
the complete moult still show an obvious barred pattern. A few central
lower scapulars superficially resemble second generation feathers, showing
a sub-terminal brown band and a prominent shaft streak.
