photo 2053: Yellow-legged Gull michahellis sub-adult, June 26 2003, Etaples, France (50.42N,1.34E). In many respects this individual resembles a full adult michahellis but note the brown primary coverts, indicating this is clearly a sub-adult bird. It has yellow legs, a clear yellow bill with very limited black, a yellow iris, a red gonydeal spot which extends diffuse on the upper mandible and complete grey upper-parts. The orbital ring is obviously red. The complete moult is in progress in this bird, with P6-P10 old and active moult in the wing-coverts. The complete median covert row is missing and the outer lower lesser coverts have been shed as well. The upper tertial has been shed as well. |
