Two colonies of Larus cachinnans

In the late 1990's, cachinnans were ringed in two colonies. One is located in the N Black Sea, near Odessa. The other island is situated in the NW corner of the Caspain Sea.

The colony in the northern Black Sea (46.26N 31.45E) is in a rich bird sanctuary which hosts large colonies of waterfowl. Cachinnans breeds on a narrow strip, only sparcely vegetated. In this location you also find the vast Ukrain Mediterranean Gull colonies.

The colony of cachinnans in the Caspian Sea (45.01N 48.18E) is different. Here they breed in reed marshes in shallow water.
