cachinnans plumages

Larus cachinnans adult, December 12 2008, Westkapelle, the Netherlands. Picture: Ies Meulmeester.

Adult female Caspian Gull, note the yellowish leg color which seems unrelated to geographical areas but rather to individual variation which is also dependent on condition. The proportion of yellow-legged and pink-legged Caspian Gulls is about 1:1 based on studies in three different populations in Poland and one on the Azov Sea. The primary pattern in this Caspian Gull is one of the most typical patterns of Caspain Gulls, note the black/white apportionment on the outer primaries, the reduced black, the large white tongues on P8, P9 and P10, the large mirror on P9 and the large complete white tip of P10, etc. reminiscent of the wing pattern shown by Thayer Gulls. With thanks to Grzegorz Neubauer for his information about the leg color.
