Herring Gull (argentatus & argenteus)

(last update: February 11, 2013)

Herring Gull (argenteus) M1 4CY, March 02 2016, Barneveld, the Netherlands.

Herring Gull ringed as pullus in 2013 in the Netherlands. Data pending.

M1 black tibia, yellow inscription (also today: MT black tibia, yellow inscription: 4CY hybrid Herring Gull x Yellow-legged Gull). Both these birds are from Amerongen colony. This colony in river Rhine, 90 km inland, is a mixed colony of most Lesser Black-backed Gull (75-100 pairs), low number of Herring Gull (approx. 15 pairs), few Yellow-legged Gull and Caspian Gull. In fact, location for the first breeding Caspian in the Netherlands. As expected, both Caspian and Yellow-legged started with hybrid pairs but maybe soon will have pure breeding pairs as well at this location? In due time, no doubt several hybrid offsprings will muddy the waters...
