Herring Gull argentatus BTO GG20689 32CY, January 15 2015, Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. Picture: Jean-Michel Sauvage.
Herring Gull with metal BTO ring GG20689, ringed as 2CY bird in England on February 22 1986 (hatch year: HY1985).
Ringed at Pitsea Marsh, Basilton, Essex, UK.
Note the obvious darker grey tone than the bird in front. Front bird also obvious white-headed, ready for courtship, as can be expected for typical local argenteus (paler on back, white-headed from January on, smaller bird, less 'hefty overall'). Ringed bird is darker and heavily streaked on head, typical argentatus from Scandinavia. Bird in the far background argentatus as well.
