Larus cachinnans 1CY-2CY PLG DN-27948 September 2011 - November 2012, Deponie Pohlsche Heide - Minden, Germany (52°23'05N, 08°46'45E). Picture: Armin Deutsch.

Metal ring from Poland, PLG DN-27948, cachinnans ringed as pullus on May 27 2011 by Marcin Sidelnik, in Wyspa na Wisle, Kepa Nadbrzeska (= Island in the Vistula River, Kepa Nadbrzeska), near Warschau, Poland (52°01' N, 21°13' E). This colony holds a mixed population, with cachinnans dominating and argentatus, michahellis and even single fuscus breeding as well. DN-27948 spend much of its 2CY on Deponie Pohlsche Heide, which allows to follow the moult progress in this individual bird. Great photographic documentation by Armin Deutsch!

Classic bird, although venetian blind effect on innerwebs of inner primaries not very conspicious. Left wing: no coverts and no tertials included in post-juvenile moult; right wing single feathers replaced.

Like other gull species, cachinnans may put much energy in defending food against rivals. But look at this smart corvide.

Complete moult started: P3/P7, P4 almost equal to P3. By this stage, most MC and inner LLC are replaced as well. Upper TT replaced as well. Central GC dropped, exposing secondary bases lying underneath.

Complete moult: P4/P7, P4 over P3. New central GC quickly growing in. Tail and secondaries completely old juvenile.

Complete moult: P4/P8, P5 almost equals P4. Moult wave in central GC progresses inwards. Now almost all LLC dropped. Tail and secondaries completely old juvenile.

Complete moult: P5/P8. Central tail feathers now dropped. In central GC the two moult waves almost meet. Last juvenile coverts are found in carpal edge. probably S1 (outermost secondary) also dropped at this stage.

Complete moult: P7/-. New tail feathers growing. Gap in central GC closed. Still coverts moult in carpal edge. Large moult gap in secondaries. Lower tertials still juvenile.

Complete moult: P8/-. New tail. Lower tertials now dropped.

Complete moult finished, note mirror on P10 common in cachinnans. Compare the picture below to the picture above (August 09 2012) to better understand the extent of the partial autumn moult. For another time, coverts ahev been replaced in September-October, and by November the wing coverts look different from August in several ways.

TT1-3 have been replaced again. GC1-3 have been replaced again. MC1-11 (MC11 last visible) replaced, LLC1-2, 4 replaced as well.
